I’ve been going about this all wrong

Since I started an early version of this blog back in 2006 or 2007, I have written posts based on topics that interested me at the time. Whenever an interesting topic crossed my path, I’d find something to write about it. Sometimes it was good stuff. Sometimes it was filler, written just to satisfy some imagined obligation to my equally imagined readership.

I realized tonight that I’ve been going about the blog all wrong.

A better approach would be a more diary-like (diaretic? hehe) approach. Write a post a day, or very close to that schedule. Instead of writing about topics, per se, write about my day in the context of digital media and journalism. What crossed my path that day pertaining to the topics that interest me? Answer that question each day and hopefully build upon what you learn as time goes on — just as you do in real life.

This approach to blogging does not preclude me from writing posts purely about topics, but the time element will help me focus my posts, linking them to the other events in my life and placing them in context, rather than trying to keep them detached. Detachment, I realize, is a mistake. A blog should put the author’s personality on display almost as much as the topics — any writing really should if it would be interesting writing.

So that’s what I’m going to try to do starting tomorrow: a post a day about my day in digital things, mostly journalism because that’s what I do. I say “try” because I know how resolutions like this go; but writing a little every day certainly can’t hurt.

(On top of that, I am still maintaining my resolution to write as much as I can on my work blog too.)
